The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness will offer a PhD scholarship for 4 years, with expected starting from September 2012. The scholarship (FPI) is associated to the research project “Organization and Policies of Promotion in the Context of Academic Careers” at the Institute of Public Goods and Policies (Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Madrid).

Aim and scope

The objective of the scholarship is to support a doctoral thesis carried out in the context of the project. The project analyzes the organization and policy of academic promotion, both in Europe and in the US. It aims to contribute to the current debate on the role of promotion systems for academic institutions and for stimulating national research excellence. The doctoral researcher is expected to contribute to the development of the project.

 

Only graduates with university degrees obtained after January 1, 2008 are eligible. Applicants are expected to have completed a degree (Bachelor or Master) that allow enrollment in a PhD program before September 2012. The successful candidate is expected to have enrolled in a doctoral program in economics, management, political science, sociology, etc. in a Spanish university by September 2012. (Note that the Spanish National Research Council does not grant PhD titles.).

 

The call is open to nationals of all countries. Proficiency in English is required and intentions to learn Spanish if it is not the mother tongue.

 

Faculty and the Institute

 

The CSIC Institute of Public Goods and Policies provides ample possibilities for doctoral students to learn about the praxis of doing research and to acquire diverse methodological skills (both quantitative and qualitative) as well as theoretical knowledge. The research project on the Organization and Policy of Academic Promotions is designed by the Department of Science and Innovation Dynamics of the Institute to take advantage of the combination of competences of researchers, coming from different disciplines: sociology, economics, political sciences, bibliometrics and public policy. The principal investigator is Prof. Laura Cruz-Castro and Dr. Natalia Zinovyeva is project co-leader; other researchers involved in the project are Prof. Luis Sanz-Menendez and Dr. Gemma Derrick.

Interested candidates should contact as soon as possible the principal investigator to show their interest and to start the preparation of the pre-application.

Please send expressions of interest before February 5, 2012. The expressions of interest should include the statement of purpose, the transcript of records and the CV. Letters of recommendation will be highly appreciated and should be sent directly by the respective referees to the principal investigator.

Upon application, candidates will be provided with further details on the scholarship and procedure. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their academic curriculum and the fit to the objectives of the research project.

 

Remuneration

First and second year: Scholarship of around 1,100 euros a month net.

Third and fourth year: Research assistance contract with the minimum annual salary of 16,000 euros.
